Tons of photos

Where have I been? Taking pictures, that's where. Let's catch up.
SHELBY
Back in October, my little sister finally nailed down a time where I could take her senior portraits. She and my other sister came to Santa Cruz where we spent the entire day shooting. She's never really been shy in front of the camera, so the hardest part was really to get her to not laugh ... at least not in every frame.

We took some classic portraits on the side of my house where the sun is nice in the morning. Most of these were pretty typical of what you would see in most senior portrait sessions.

After a quick wardrobe change and a short drive, My sisters, my wife and I unloaded the equipment at DeLaVeaga Park where I had hoped to get Shelby in a redwood setting. My inexperience simply made the shade of the redwoods look like a darkened studio. Still, the shots came out pretty nice (even the one above where I couldn't get her to stop laughing).

Shelby also wanted some shots near the water and some at the railroad tracks. The water ones came out pretty OK, but the railroad tracks didn't look so good. On to the last setting.

The main setting I thought of for her portraits was Lighthouse Field as the sun was setting. The sun would backlight the weeds and give a luminescent glow to the photo. The field, which is at Lighthouse Point, was covered in fog that day though. Still, I got most of the photos I wanted and I think Shelby really liked that setting as well. Maybe I can get her out there during the summer sometime and take some more just for fun.

ELYSE
I can't show you any of the new photos I took of my friend Elyse because she wants to use them as promo shots and doesn't want them online first. Hopefully she'll let me post some later. We still had a lot of fun taking new photos of her at Wilder Ranch in November. The main reason for the shoot was because she won the Freeride World Tour Championship in skiing and has an old wooden pair of skis as a trophy. Trust me, the shots look good.

THANKSGIVING
Other that fun family photos, my main goal over the Thanksgiving holiday was to get a nice portrait of my grandfather. That really wasn't as easy as it sounds. He's not a fan of having his picture taken anymore (not sure if he ever was or if this is new). I had originally wanted to pose him in his living room, but I was traveling light for the holiday and didn't bring my lighting setup, just a flash. I got him talking to my wife about how to make salsa (she loves his salsa verde and may be the main reason she married me ... to get that recipe). Soon, he forgot the camera was there and I was able to get my shots.

I haven't given up on the living room portraits though. Next time.

The rest of the photos I took were mainly fun family photos. I'm sure at first that the family tired of me always snapping photos, but as always, people soon forget about. That's when the best photos happen.

49ERS
Yes, I got to be on the sidelines and shoot a 49ers game. The only bad thing was that I couldn't cheer when the 49ers beats Favre and the Jets. The reason I was going was to take photos of Jets cornerback Dwight Lowery, who went to school in Santa Cruz County. Sentinel reporter Jim Seimas was doing a story on his chances at Rookie of the Year and my wife (Jim's boss) was there to get some extra quotes from other players on what they thought about Lowery.

The morning started out a little rough. I accidentally turned off the alarm and slept in an extra hour as a result. Anyone who knows me knows that I don't like to be late. I was told to get to the ballpark at about 10 a.m. but the late start and a very bad accident on Highway 17 got us up there at noon ... an hour before kickoff. Basically this meant that I didn't have time to figure out a lot of the basics of shooting an NFL game like where the photographer's bathroom was. I had to pee the entire first half. I finally had a chance to ask at halftime. This being Candlestick Park, I was pointed to the old Giants dugout. I pissed in the same toilet as Barry Bonds. I feel stronger already.

On the sidelines, the game happens fast. So fast that I couldn't always keep up with what was happening on the field. I was too worried about framing my shots and staying in focus. I got lucky in that every touchdown that day happened right in front of me. Jason Hill's fumble in the endzone ... got it. Favre's rushing touchdown ... right at me. I even managed a few good snaps of Lowery covering passes and making tackles.

See more 49ers photos here.

CHRISTINA THE ROCK STAR
If you ever want to have a blast while photographing someone, get Christina. She wanted to pretend she was a rock star getting some promo shots done for her latest album. Never mind that she doesn't have a whole lot of musical ability (sorry Christina). Still, she wanted to play the part and I was only too happy to practice lighting her. Besides, If I could get her not to laugh in every frame, I could do the same with anyone.

It's been said that our photoshoot was like a "Behind the Music" episode. We started out light and happy, went to some edgy yelling, then dark and moody. We finished with her swigging from a whiskey bottle and looking pretty hung over.

Exciting Times

It's been a while since I last posted and I really have no excuse. Hopefully, things will soon change.

First up, I've been contemplating a site redesign for some time and I think I'm closer to nailing what I want it to look like. Simple, simple simple. Just the facts ma'am. I've always had a problem with my portfolio, which is not the thing for a photographer to have a problem with. Hopefully, I'll soon be switching Adobe Lightroom web galleries, which will streamline everything and have the look I like.

Also, I've been working to get some of my photos shown publicly. No, not museums or anything like that, but at local pizza places and coffee shops. The pizza place is up in the air, but the coffee shop seems a bit more solid. I'll post more on that when I know more.

I'm still being published every quarter in Santa Cruz Magazine as their featured photographer. I get to show one image of someplace in Santa Cruz County. Usually the editor goes through my site and picks what she wants, but hey, I'm still published. I was also contacted my pro surfer Peter Mel, whom I shot last year for Santa Cruz Magazine, and he wants to use some of those photos I took for his publicity and website. Pro skier Elyse Saugstad is also using some shot I took for her own publicity purposes and hopefully we'll have another session soon. And Lighthouse Bank will be using one of my photos of the Walton Lighthouse for their brochure. I'm everywhere these days.

Finally, and most importantly, this weekend I will be shooting my sister's senior portraits at a few spots around town. I've been looking forward to this for some time and I hope to have some frames posted by early next week.

AVP Tour

With my wife (still feels strange to say that) a sports writer, I get the chance to go to shoot a lot of events, which is great. I never thought of myself as a sports photographer, but it is now my second-favorite type of photo to shoot behind portraits.

Here are some shots of volleyball players at the AVP Tour in San Francisco on Sunday, Sept. 14, 2008.

Aidan the Wonder Kid

This is little Aidan, with whom I went camping with over the weekend. This guy, who just turned 2, has no fear what-so-ever. He was jumping off a small dock to go swimming like it was nothing. I wish I got to see him try some skiing because I think he'll be an X-Games athlete someday.

At the Rodeo

Some photos from my day at the California Rodeo Salinas. I was able to talk my way into the chutes where the riders get ready and was back there for about an hour and a half before the PR woman asked if I had all the photos I needed. Truth be told, the best way to watch a rodeo is from the chutes.

I was trying to get some candid portraits as opposed to action shots, but once the action started, it's hard not to point your camera at it. I', sure I'll get even better shots next time.

More Wedding Photos

It's been a week and a half and I'm still smiling. The wedding was fantastic and the family and friends attending really made it special. I'm trying to get slideshow going, but I think Flickr is having some problems. I'll post back here when it's up and running.

I finally tied the knot with my love Julie. The ceremony was at the Villa Maria del Mar in Santa Cruz and the reception was at the Cocoanut Grove Sun Room at the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk. I'm half way between moving, so I don't have all the photos up just yet, but I did grab this one.

Hollywood Starlet

My friend Christina wanted some shot of her dolled up as a 1950s Hollywood starlet. The lighting was easy, getting her to not laugh in every frame was tough.

Published in Fluid

Posing Elyse
Originally uploaded by Anthony L. Solis.

I just got my copy of Fluid, a French ski photomagazine. In it they did a short on skier Elyse Saugstad and used this photo. I'm internationally published now. Got my credit and everything. If you happen to find this in the states, my photo is in Volume 18 on page 128. My copy seems to have a slight printing problem though. The skin tone is extra grainy and it looks like another photo bled onto this one. Hope it's just my copy but if not, at least I still got published.

A weekend of shooting

My sister asked if I could take some headshots of her friend while she was in town, which of course meant I needed to take pictures of my sister as well. Since I need all the practice I can get, and had two willing subjects, I was game.

And since I had the photography bug, yesterday evening I hung out at West Cliff Drive and shot pretty much whatever I saw.

Practice

Shelby
Originally uploaded by Anthony L. Solis.

The great thing about having little sisters is that they (well, mine at least) love having their picture taken. Shelby here is such a ham when it comes to camera that I think the camera phone was invented just so she could always be photographed.

She will be a senior in high school next year, so this was practice for when I eventually take her senior portraits.

Lots of surf shots recently

Suiting Up
Originally uploaded by Anthony L. Solis.

As I mentioned before, I've been borrowing a 600mm lens from a guy trying to sell it to me. Unfortunately, I can't afford it right now (with a wedding 4 months away and all). Today is supposed to be my last day with the lens, so I headed back over the Steamer Lane for some final surf shots. Things didn't work out the way I had planned though.

The waves were flat for the most part. At least they were flat where the light was best, so I moved closer to the cliff where there were some actual breaks. Problem with that was that I was WAY too close with a 600mm. I decided to pull out my cheap 70-300mm even though I have never been happy with the results when I take action shots.

Today was different. The lens seemed sharper than it usually does. The focusing was still slow, but it was good enough for the slow-moving waves. I even got the above shot of a surfer just about to enter the water.

All in all, a good day of shooting and I didn't even need the 600mm.

... although I still want it.

A friend is trying to sell me a 600mm Canon lens, so he let me borrow it and take it out for a spin. It's nearly too much lens for me, but I sure enjoyed using it.

This is at Steamer Lane in Santa Cruz, CA. This guy came up to me and talked a bit after his session, so if you are he, give me an e-mail at tony@solisphotography.org.

As far as the lens goes, it's a monster. It's very sharp and gets you right up in people's faces at 100 yards away.

I'm still salivating.

Watch what you say

Freedom of Speech
Originally uploaded by Anthony L. Solis.

OK, this is unusual for me. I've never really taken a "concept" portrait before. I was home alone, playing with my softbox and trying to figure out its properties when I decided I wanted to try a photo that was something other than me just looking into the camera. I started looking around the house for props and found a roll of police tape that belongs to my roommate (don't ask).

I wrapped the tape around my mouth and snapped two frames. That's when the political statement hit me.

I've been in the newspaper business for about 13 years now and lately, this is what I feel is happening to us. We are being silenced. Veteran reporters are being laid off to save a buck, readers cry "BIAS" when a story doesn't say what they want it to say and more and more emphasis is being placed on the online product even though newspaper haven't figured out how to make money online yet. I think a lot of newspaper people feel like this; be careful what you say or write or you could be the next to go.

OK, so there's my little rant for the day. Do any of you have other thoughts on this photo (all 3 of you that read this)?

Bailey Portrait
