The Difference

The Difference

This struck me as very funny. I had processed the bottom picture right after my trip to San Francisco for the Bay to Breakers race. The top photo I had forgotten about until I saw it pop up on my screensaver. I thought the two would work well together. These photo were taken about 30 minutes apart and I didn't plan it at all.

Antique Tulips

These are some tulips I bought for my girlfriend since they are her favorite. I was going to try a 2-flash setup, but my Nikon SB-28 stopped working. Oh well.

The Press

The Press
Originally uploaded by Anthony L. Solis.

This was a shot I took for my motion blur assignment at Cabrillo College. The press was shaking so much that I had to hold down the tripod to minimize blur. The best part of this photo for me is that those are my pages coming off the press.

The Lines

The Lines
Originally uploaded by Anthony L. Solis.

I took this picture for my photography class. The assignment was to incorporate design elements into the frame; in this case, line and contrast. If not for this assignment, I never would have thought to take such an abstract photo.

By the way, this is the underbelly of the newspaper press. The white is the paper and the dark lines are the metal bars that hold it in place. The horizontal shadows are from the framework on the second story of the press.

The Monterey Bay Aquarium is a very tough place to shoot without a tripod and all that glass make a flash a challenge as well.

Plus, there are all of those cliche opportunities. Do pictures of people taking pictures of cliches make the pictures you took a cliche?

Framed Barn at Wilder

Framed Barn at Wilder
Originally uploaded by Anthony L. Solis.

Another photo class picture. This one I knew would be better manipulated in Photoshop than in the darkroom. I lightened the shadows and used curve, graident map and channel mixer adjustment layers to get the sepia look.

I was inside another barn, looking through a window when I took this.

Poppies are back

Poppies are back

My photography class assignment was depth-of-field this week, so this is what I came up with. I shot it with my black and white film, but decided to grab a color digital shot simply because I thought it might look nice.

There is no post production work on this.

Leather Clad

Leather Clad

This was actually a test shot of Elyse before we started working. I just wanted to check the exposure. She was bundled up in her leather jacket and I thought the little hint of light hitting it looked kinda cool.

I'm really taking pictures

I know I haven't posted a new picture in a while, but most of my photos have been for my class and on film. I'll get them all scanned in once the class is over, but for now, the negs stay in the sleeve.

Today I did have some fun shooting our newspaper press. The pressmen let me wander around to capture images of the newspapers flying by at breakneck speads. I only wish our press could stay longer (for more on the Santa Cruz Sentinel press shutting down, click HERE).

I did go back to the archives and process a photo I took of pro-skier Elyse Saugstad (who just won the Saloman New Mexico Extreme Freeride Championship). I've got to keep practicing my digital skills for when my class is over. I'll post the result soon.
